Can I fit an ensuite in any room?

Posted on 17 August 2020

Ensuites come with a wide range of benefits. Not only does installing an ensuite allow more than one person to shower at the same time whilst greatly reducing the distance from your bed to your bathroom, but it can also add significant value to your home. Research suggests that a top-quality ensuite can increase a property’s value by around 5%. Depending on the value of your house, you may well be able to add much more than the cost of the installation to its asking price. Quality Bathrooms can help if you want to invest in ensuites in Epworth Brigg, Scunthorpe, or Gainsborough.

An ensuite can also help you overcome the bathroom rush, providing you with your own private space for getting ready in the morning. It’s also ideal if you don’t have any children now but are planning new additions in the future. As your children grow older, they will likely spend longer and longer in the bathroom, which can make an additional showering space essential. When your main bathroom is used by other members of your family and visitors, an ensuite can be incredibly useful.

Add an ensuite to a tight space

If you do want to install an ensuite in tight space, the good news is that it is perfectly possible to do so. As long as water supply access is available, you can even install an ensuite in a tight, small room. You may wish to opt for a shower instead of a bath if there isn’t much space available. Perhaps your space is limited but you are ready to do whatever it takes to have an ensuite installed? Then you may need to make some adjustments to your space. Airing cupboards and built-in wardrobes have commonly been removed to free up space for ensuites. You could even take space from an adjoining bedroom to create room for your shower.

Consider investing in a wetroom

If it isn’t possible to add an ensuite to your bedroom, you could consider transforming another room into a wetroom. A wetroom is a tiled room that is lined in a way that prevents water from escaping. It can be viewed as a walk-in shower room. Sinks and toilets are normally built into wetrooms. One of the great things about wetrooms is that it’s quick and easy to wipe them down when anything gets wet.

If you do want to create a wetroom, the walls and floor need to be fully lined. It’s also essential that the floor is angled to a drainage point so water doesn’t run into your bedroom or elsewhere. Ensuites also have extractors or other solutions so steam can escape. If the wetroom is not sufficiently ventilated, you could face issues with mould and mildew.

Toilets and sinks for small ensuite bathrooms

Angled toilets designed to fit in corners are ideal for small ensuite bathrooms where space is limited. Sinks created with cloakrooms in mind are also suitable as they tend to be much smaller and narrower than traditional sinks. You can also overcome spatial limitations by purchasing a fully enclosed unit. These units are often seen in caravans and consist of the shower, sink and toilet in one simple unit. Although you won’t have much room for manoeuvre, a fully enclosed unit could be the answer to your prayers when you need to kit out a tight space.

Many people find the water supply and pipework issues stop them installing the right ensuite for their needs. With a macerator, you can install toilets anywhere without using large pipes. The waste will be able to fit smaller pipes after the macerator grounds it up before sending the material towards your primary soil pipe.
